Making great music on your PC is something which can be really appealing to experienced DJ's, people starting out who want to give it a try before buying expensive mixing equipment and those who simply want to have a bit of fun playing about with their music.

The Virtual DJ program which you will find free on the internet is a fairly basic application which would be most suitable for the last two of those types of people. Apart from anything else, experienced DJ's probably already have equipment which offer more scope than this free program, and if not would really need to pay £100 or so for the full version in order to get the benefit they need from it.

For those who are starting out or just looking for a new hobby then this basic version offers more than enough for them to work out if this kind of thing is right for them before they splash out on the full version.

If you are going to be buying a mixing console with a USB console then the full version of Virtual DJ will often come with it, so you are best checking that out before paying to download it.

The application itself isn't really aimed at beginner DJ's but you should be able to work out what does what on the interface with a little bit of investigation. You will automatically get a folder in the bottom of the screen which lets you pick out the songs that you want to use, and alongside this you can browse and sample the music you are interested in. At the top of the screen you get a red turntable and a blue one. Here you can carry out all the usual DJ functions.

The interface is very good to look at but you may find that it is a bit tricky to use with your mouse / keyboard combination. It has obviously been designed with those mixing consoles we mentioned earlier in mind. If you like the program as it is then your next step will be to decide whether to pay the money to get the full program and the proper equipment which will let you take the next step towards making great music on your PC.
